Energy-efficient handling of refrigerated containers in DB Port Szczecin

Currently, the problems of energy efficiency in transport are becoming increasingly important. This issue arises especially when handling of refrigerated containers that require a permanent connection to the electricity supply while they are in a seaport.

By striving to comply with the rules of sustainable transport development and the European Green Deal strategy, DB Port Szczecin acts to implement energy-saving environmentally friendly technologies, looking for innovative solutions developed by research centres in Poland. In 2018, a letter of intent was signed between DB Port Szczecin and the Faculty of Maritime Technology and Transport of the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin. Its content expressed the will to conduct joint research, development and implementation works in terms of energy-saving refrigeration containers stored on storage yards. As a result of research works conducted by prof. dr hab. inż. Sergiya Filina and dr hab. inż. Ludmiła Filina-Dawidowicz, prof. of the WPUT, the concept of a solution was created to reduce the losses or heat gains of adjacent refrigerated cargo containers placed on storage yards. The concept is to seal the free spaces between the containers located on the storage yard using innovative technology, as a result causing a reduction of heat from the environment to the container. This, in turn, results in a significant reduction in electricity consumption and a reduction in the level of fixed costs of companies. Currently, this solution has been protected by a patent.

DB Port Szczecin is interested in the implementation of this solution and the continuation of joint research aimed at searching for innovative technical and technological solutions for handling of refrigerated containers.
